Next month will mark my 10th anniversary being a real estate agent.  It is the most fantastic career  and I love going to work every day.   I work more hours than I ever did at any other job.   I have no guarantee of ever being paid again.   Now don't let these facts scare you away from getting licensed.   It could end up being the most significant thing you ever do careerwise in your life.

My motivation for selling homes started out from fear.   It was 2006 in early March and I had just learned that the company I worked for and had a vested interest in, was going to go out of business.   Our largest supplier declared a force majeure and commodity prices had gone through the roof.   We had presold deliveries stretching out over a 2 to 3 year period

So you are thinking of moving to Valparaiso, Indiana.  What should you expect?  What is it like?  Will you like living here?

I am here to tell you that I love living in Valparaiso.  I have lived here since 2004, but I have been coming here since I was a child. It is about an hours drive to downtown Chicago.  We can actually get downtown faster than most people who live in the western suburbs of Chicago.  A lot of my clients were once Illinois residents and now are Hoosiers.  The city has changed a lot in the last 10 years.  It is growing quite fast, but in a really good way.  I have to give credit to the local officials who have planned the growth and managed to keep our small town feel.  We also are lucky to have some really great local companies

Are you on the cutting edge of technology?  Is your company conducting business based on 3 to 5 year plans?   This is appropriate for certain aspects of the organization, but if that is how they are addressing technology, they are dinosaurs.  Innovation is constant and we see that every week in technology.   There are things we are using on a daily basis that did not exist 12 months ago, and now we cannot believe we ever did business without them.   This is not going to change, it's only going to speed up.   Are you on the cutting edge of technology?   Is your broker?   If not, you're going to find yourself falling further and further behind.   At a certain point you may just give up thinking that you cannot catch up.   Don't worry.  Take a deep breath.
